Myofascial Release & Cranio-Sacral Therapy Trevor Hosking

Myofascial Release is a therapy that addresses restrictions within the body's tissues - it is not only muscles that can hold tension.

It generally uses sustained holds of light pressure that feel like deep essential stretching into otherwise forgotten and in-accessible areas. It is a therapy that is suitable for everyone, as you can always benefit from having these tissues released.

(Myo-)Fascia is in fact the supporting structure in which muscle cells are embedded. This supportive sheath continues to form tendons, ligaments and periosteum (the lining of bones) and also lines every nerve and blood vessel as well as the inside and outside of organs. The benefits of Myofascial Release therefore reach to all of these areas and allow for proper positioning, tonus and function.

It is also highly suited to sports related injuries. An important function of fascia is to disperse shock throughout the body. When fascia is tight this function is impeded and often the force is vectored (channeled) into specific structures causing injury and also preventing proper recovery unless addressed. It is a very strong tissue that can withstand more than 350kg/cm², which is the force it can exert on other structures such as cartilage, nerves, blood vessels etc. This explains its role in recurring injuries and the failure of perfectly well-performed surgical procedures such as reconstructions.

Cranio-Sacral therapy is very similar to Myofascial Release except that it focuses more on the positioning of cranial bones, the pelvis and sacrum and their slight movements (or lack thereof). It also uses these bones as levers to affect the fascial structures within the central nervous system the regulator of all the body s systems.

After a Myofascial Release session you could expect to feel free and open both physically and within the mind. It offers an opportunity to engage the mind-body link and emotional holding and response patterns can be addressed and let go. A simple example of this link is the way we become tense in certain areas under stress (e.g. jaw or stomach), though this principle reaches much further, releasing unwanted tension throughout the system.
